Storytelling

I had a lunch with a friend the other day, he asked me why I chose "Storyteller" for my tag on my website. "Why not author, writer, journal keeper?" We both knew the answer. Storytelling is universal. In every age, and every culture storytelling has been a core tool.

At the outset the statement is clear and plausible. From early cave drawings, to scribbles on scrolls, or verbalized tales from previous generations - storytelling is a life fact. I believe, on closer inspection there is more to it than external word craft. I believe storytelling is the engine that drives life. The most important stories come from us. Every day, minute to minute we tell our own story. That story shapes everything in this world.

Consider this, if someone stopped us and asked about who we were, we would have a story to tell. We might include our origin, our careers, or other interests. Depending on the person asking or the situation they asked from, we might offer other details, such has frustrations, joys, or wishes. If the person asked how your day was, you would answer with a story. Even if it was as simple as, "It was okay." That little phrase tells the story listener a lot. They and you shape an impression around those words.

Humans live by story. Every belief, conviction, and life map come to us as a story. Every day we each add to the story. We retell certain parts. At the same time editing others.

A fun experiment to try is to listen to your brain conversation as you start your day. What is it saying? What are you rehearsing? Are you planning anything? Are you debating anyone? That conversation is the rough draft of the story you will play out. Like any good adventure story, your story may collide with others along the way. But you will have authored it first.

My question to you is, "What story are you telling?" You are the author, the editor, the director, and the producer all in one. You can tell a tragic story. Or a triumphant story. You can redefine yourself through your story. No one can take away another's story, unless we let them.

Returning to my friend's question, why did I choose "storyteller" as my tag? Because it encapsulates life and it is what I do. I write, I share, I tell, and I live my best story yet.

With summer exploding upon us, I invite you to take the long sunny days and examine your story. Does it suit your noblest vision? If someone were to read it in a journal or book, would you love it? I hope so.

Tell your story well. I promise you; your story shapes the world. Generations beyond you will appreciate what you wrote and lived.
